Singer and multi-instrumentalist Lynn Cassiers and keyboardist-composer Jozef Dumoulin have been making music together for more than 20 years.
A long and fascinating list of events led them to set up a project around the music of the 12th-century mystic Hildegard von Bingen, in a line-up for voice, electronics and organ. Yet, it feels like an obvious, like coming home somewhere.
Hildegard von Bingen’s music is essentially monodic, made to be performed by one voice and perhaps one steady pedal note as accompaniment. A large part of the project consisted of finding the right approach and tone for this line-up. Watching how these melodies resonate today and what they evoke, exploring spaces where they can simply unfold. Improvisation played a key role in this process; listen, feel, dream. A song by Robert Schumann and a melody by Tom Jobim were added to enhance and stabilize the colours and atmospheres that presented themselves.
The result is called Sibyl Of The Rhine and is of an enchanting beauty, made to be heard time and time again. But it is also a clear blueprint and a powerful resource for future live performances.
