Vijay Iyer & Craig Taborn | Julian Lage Trio
Vijay Iyer & Craig Taborn (US)
One evening with two grand pianos! In 2013 Leuven Jazz invited pianists Stefano Bollani and Fred Hersch in a world premiere as a duo. This time, we present two American pianists, Craig Taborn and Vijay Iyer. They count among the most influential jazz pianists of their generation, following in the footsteps of Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock of the seventies.
Taborn and Iyer met as sparring partners in Roscoe Mitchell’s Note Factory, a double band with two brass players, two bass players, two drummers and … two pianists. They also shared a common adoration for keyboard players such as Sun Ra, Geri Allen en Cecil Taylor. They each appear in changing band compositions and are active under the wings of the prestigious ECM label. Craig Taborn’s Daylight Ghosts (2017) as well as Far From Over (2017) by the Vijay Iyer Sextet got worldwide acclaim as two of the best jazz releases of the year.
Their busy schedules don’t allow for too many gigs as a duo. This concert will focus on the dialogue between two styles of playing, an exciting encounter on the tipping point between composition and free improvisation. On March 15th their eagerly awaited duo album (ECM) will be released, so a unique occasion to discover them live a few days later!
Julian Lage Trio (US)
Guitarist Julian Lage has been
hailed as a great musician for the past twenty years, which is remarkable
because he only just turned thirty. As a ten-year-old, he shared the stage with
Carlos Santana, at twelve he performed at the Grammys with Gary Burton and when
he was fifteen he enrolled at Stanford University.
In recent years, he has been living up to the promise of his exceptional youth and transforming the jazz-guitar world. With two Grammy nominations, he combines his sensational playing of melodic musical elements from pre-bebop, folk music and swing with a light rock feel. His unpretentious style conceals a technical skill that it is almost impossible to match.
His new trio album - with Jorge Roeder on bass and Eric Doob on drums - will be released at end of February. Leuven Jazz will be his exclusive stop-over in the Low Countries ... so don't miss out!
Iyer & Taborn
- “They showed an amazing level of communication as they ran through one adventurous number after another. They kept the crowd guessing throughout the set list, motoring through a variety of tunes that spanned the gamut of modern jazz styles. The two players volleyed short leads countless times, delivering the musical equivalent of a tennis match” (JazzTimes).
- “A piano spectacle that meandered between expressionism and impressionism.” (Enola.be on Vijay Iyer & Craig Taborn).
‘A virtuosic swirl of twangy textures and gritty grooves that cry Americana with a postmodern twist’ (Downbeat over Modern Lore).
‘He doesn’t need to hide behind effects’ (Jazz Wise).
