The Natural

1930s. Roy Hobbs, an unknown baseball player with a mysterious past, appears out of nowhere to take a professional baseball team – that loses more than it wins – to the top of the league.

Sixteen years earlier, Hobbs had been a talented hitter on his way to a shining baseball career, but some tragic events threw a spanner in the works and Roy and his talent fell into oblivion. With a bat cut from a tree struck by lightning, Hobbs hopes to revive his previously failed career.

Commentary

Based on Bernard Malamud's debut novel, the beloved baseball classic brings sports and film together in a drama about the life story of an ambitious batter. The film, starring Oscar winners Robert Redford and Robert Duvall, won a Grammy for Best Instrumental Composition in 1985 for the beautiful soundtrack composed by Randy Newman.

Redford gives a grandiose rendition of the rough path that is essentially a metaphor for failure and success in trying to make it in America. Filled with intriguing and mythical elements, the work is known as the achievement with which Barry Levinson proved himself as a director. Four years later, after four missed nominations for The Natural, Levinson will win an Oscar for Rain Man.
