Raphael Malfliet

Raphael Malfliet is an experimental electric bass player, composer and performer based in Antwerp. He studied at the conservatory of Antwerp where he obtained his Master’s degree in jazz. After graduating in 2014, Raphael became interested in contemporary classical and experimental music and composition, focussing intensely on how to connect those interests with free improvised music and his approach to the electric bass. Raphael obtained his Bachelor’s degree in composition in 2019.

‍Raphael's current work revolves around the attempt to translate characteristics of generative art, made by autonomous systems, to his role as a composer and performer. By focussing on a balance between indeterminate parameters and frameworks of rules and possibilities, inspired by games, he tries to challenge the performers and himself to interact differently with known material in relation to sound and space. In doing this, he withholds himself from creating in a certain style but will use any means possible to support, challenge and question the subject of the research. This results in embracing randomness and coincidental outcomes that often render layers of sound with changing microscopic cell structures.

‍Raphael teaches electric bass and ensemble at the academy of Herentals and coordinates 'Solo Not Solo', a BA3 dance graduation project at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp.

Mr. Chong

Mr. Chong is a free improv trio consisting of Milan Donvil (drums), Rikkie Joris (guitar) and Charel Maes (sax, synth and sampler). During their studies, they discovered – despite their diverse musical backgrounds – a common love for free improvisation. The result is both unpredictable and unique: abstract interplay leads to simple but powerful melodies and vice versa (think Albert Ayler or Louis Moholo). That balance between chaos and order, tempo or no tempo, high or low energy is central to Mr. Chong’s music.

Press

  • "Little by little, they deconstruct time, in which long, organic and sometimes dissonant saxophone tones provide the ground for unexpected rhythms. A beautiful collection of sounds in which both peace and haste find their way and in which listening to each other is central." (Club Kultuur)
  • "The journey will lead you along atmospheric heights, between galaxies and comets. Only to end up in hellish scenes. These guys know better than anyone how to play their instruments the way they should but especially the way they shouldn't." (VI.be)
