Youran was born two years ago when the Dutch festival North Sea Round Town (NSRT) gave Joachim Badenhorst carte blanche to put together a new group.
Badenhorst invited five musicians, all at the top of their game and open to experimentation: Japanese percussionist Tsubasa Hori, Irish bassist and guitarist Simon Jermyn, Scottish trumpeter Alistair Payne, Belgian trombonist Nabou Claerhout and Rotterdam-based electronic musician Rutger Zuydervelt (aka Machinefabriek). The concerts in an old margarine factory and the imposing Laurenskerk became highlights of the NSRT festival.
Youran means 'the beginning of things' in Japanese and can be translated into Chinese as 'unhurried', referring to the novelty and unhurried nature of the performance.
Youran plays a unique set each time, in which the location plays an important role. The ensemble performs compositions and improvisations specially developed for the acoustics of the 30CC/Predikherenkerk. The musicians are arranged around the audience and sometimes move around the room, so that the audience is completely immersed in the sounds coming in from all sides.
The concert at Leuven Jazz will be Youran's first on Belgian soil, a premiere!
